Project

Combining mathematical, computational and experimental techniques to enhance the development of a pre-vascularised tissue engineered construct for peripheral nerve repair

Georgina is utilising mathematical modelling to investigate the key cell mechanisms and culture conditions involved in vascular network formation in vitro. Endothelial cells, when seeded within a scaffold and cultured under suitable conditions, are capable of forming capillary-like structures in vitro. However, optimisation of this network formation involves numerous variables in scaffold properties and culture conditions.

Mathematical modelling seeks to identify the key factors, offering a shortcut when combined with experimental data from tailored experiments. Applying this to engineered neural tissue will aid the design of a pre-vascularised construct for peripheral nerve repair applications.
